3.3 Survival Challenge
Introduction
The year is 2201. The earth as we know it no longer exists. Civilization has destroyed itself through nuclear wars, pollution, and lack of respect for the environment. The human race has all but ceased to exist.
A group of multi-cultural scientists, doctors, and engineers have survived by living in a biosphere for the last 20 years. As they emerge from their protected sphere, they find Earth totally destroyed. They need to rebuild the Earth and civilization. They will have to rebuild using only recycled materials that can be scavenged from the countryside.
You are one of the engineers assigned to complete one of the tasks. Your team’s job is to create mechanical machines that will help the scientists and doctors rebuild the earth.

Procedure
Working with a partner, you will complete the Survival Challenge. Using the knowledge acquired while building the mechanical gears, design and build a model for one of the following tasks. Use the templates to document your design process (print, or just copy format into design notebook). To survive, your class will need to complete all of the tasks below.

Use the templates to document your design process (print, or just copy format into design notebook). To survive, your class will need to complete all of the tasks below.
- Meet with partner; choose task.
- Define problem. Complete Design Brief.
- Generate concepts. Complete at least 3 sketches per group in design notebook. May need to research during this phase (What is 4WD? How is water pumped from the ground? etc.)
- Develop a solution. Complete Decision Matrix.
- Show Design Brief, Decision Matrix, and sketches to Mr. Jaeger for clearance.
- Construct and test prototype.
- Evaluate solution.
- Present solution. Create short video or annotated image (Google Drawing or on ThingLink)
- Review Rubric.
- Turn in notebooks, presentation, & Time Sheet
Task 1:
The scientists and doctors need a vehicle that will take them over the rough terrain to search for other survivors and to collect data.
|
Task 2:
The scientists need a machine that will rotate a solar collection dish from inside their labs. The machine must be located outside the building.
|
Task 3:
Doctors need a machine to move all of their operating equipment and generators, at one time, from room to room. Some of these rooms are on the second floor, so the machine should be able to traverse both horizontally and vertically.
|
Task 4:
For all members to survive, they must have food, water, and shelter. This means pumping water from the ground, cutting wood for building, and grinding grain for flour.
